The history of Byzantium:

According to the founding myth of Byzantium, as handed down by Strabo, the settlers followed an oracle - probably the Oracle of Delphi - which urged them to build their city against the city of the "blind". The blind were implied by the inhabitants of Chalcedon, who had founded their city on the opposite Asian shore of the Bosporus without seeing the extraordinary advantages of the opposite location. The main advantage of the location, compared to that of Chalcedon, was its greater possibility of defense, as the Byzantine citadel at the junction of the Horn and the Bosphorus, was almost completely protected by the sea, with the exception of only the western part, where it was the erection of walls is possible. At the same time, the area controlled the sea routes and for commercial purposes and could be used as a starting point for the establishment of new colonies along the Bosphorus. In addition, from a climatic point of view, the cold currents of the Bosphorus gave enough rain that made the arable lands fertile and the uncultivated ones full of dense forests. Byzantium developed rapidly, was walled up and occupied lands on the Asian coast. During Pausanias, it was one of the best fortified cities of antiquity. We also get historical information about Byzantium from Herodotus. The tyrant of the city, Ariston, supported together with other Greek generals the Persian king Darius in his campaign against the Scythians. During the Ionian Revolution it was occupied by Greek forces and after its end, its inhabitants moved, establishing Mesivria on the west coast of the Black Sea.
